This icon shows the Mother of God in her Byzantine glory! This icon shows the face of the Madonna on a rich gold ground with red border. Her slender nose, small lips, and almond shaped eyes indicate dating to the late 16th century in the Veneto Cretan tradition. This icon shows similarities to Emmanuel Lambrados workshop examples.
Condition
This icon features a largely undisturbed paint layer with abrasions to the gold background, some cupping to the support perpendicular to the grain direction. The paint layer looks homogeneous under UV indicating an honest icon without historical or modern overpainting. It at one point featured a revetment or riza, as evidenced by the partial nails and one small fragment, which remain. The revetment probably consisted of a border and a halo and may not have been original to the piece, but added later to show the significance of the piece.
