17th C Italian Baroque Painting on Alabaster King David and Angels Curiosity

This Italian painting on alabaster dates the early to mid 17th century and is done by a follower of Italian painter Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630). The painting is intended to follow the natural patterning in the stone with the top white section representing heavenly clouds and the lower portion the earthly realm. A kneeling saint, or King David, is painted in the center. A partial Italian interior is shown in the lower right. The painting is done in delicate semi-transparent layers so that the beauty of the underlying stone is not lost. This would have been a cabinet of curiosities type piece when new. Pieces like this exemplify the Italian Baroque era and it likely originated in Rome. Included is it's original frame, which has some decorative losses and structural cracks and could benefit from restoration. There are also some paint losses on the stone which could be restored. Do not miss the chance to add this unique 17th century curiosity to your collection.
