Utagawa Kunisada Signed Japanese Woodblock Print Woman with a Mirror c1830
This original Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada is a stunning example of his work. This print titled "Woman with a Hand Mirror" is from his 1830s series The Six Tama Rivers of the Floating World. It is signed Kochoro Kunisada in the elegant right side cartouche. The woman is using a double mirror technique to adjust the hair on the back of her head, as you can see in the mirror she is holding. This is an original 1830s impression, which has been confirmed by the lack of modern fibers under blacklight and due to displays of block wear in the fine lines of the carving. The quality is consistent with an early pull, presenting a soft, honest patina on authentic period washi. It is framed in a wide stepped red wood profile and single black mat which compliments the piece well. The piece is hinged to it's backing board using archivally correct materials.
