18c Sacrifice of Abraham Greek Icon Antique Hand Painted Athens, Greece
This Greek icon of the Sacrifice of Abraham is an original 18th century hand painted old testament narrative icon. It is painted in egg tempura over gold leaf and gesso. It shows Abraham standing over his son Isaac upon a sacrificial altar. An angel of the lord appears over his shoulder steadying his hand and pointing him away towards a ram in a thicket which God has sent as an alternative sacrifice. The icon is beautifully painted on gold leaf with the skill of the artist seen in the flowing robes of Abraham. The Greek script reads "The Sacrifice of Abraham" and the icon likely dates to about 1780. It has faux tortoise shell like texture painted on the reverse, which was a practice common at the time. It additionally has a tag on the reverse which lists it's origin as Athens, Greece. Narrative images like this are considerably rarer than other scenes and this one is beautifully illustrated. There are no signs of any kind of restoration work on this piece and it is in wonderful condition, as seen in the photos. Do not miss the chance to add it to your collection.
